The national picture: petrol and diesel prices in Ireland

Fuel prices in Ireland are set by individual retailers and vary considerably across the country. The headline figures published weekly by the CSO capture a national snapshot, but the range between the cheapest and most expensive forecourt on any given day can easily span 10 to 15 cent per litre. In urban areas, particularly Dublin, Cork, and Galway city centres, competition between nearby stations tends to keep prices tighter. In rural and remote counties, the nearest alternative may be 20 kilometres away, which removes the competitive pressure that drives prices down in towns.

Petrol (unleaded 95 octane) and diesel (standard road diesel) have traded within a few cent of each other for most of the past decade. The gap between them reflects differences in refinery margins and excise structure rather than crude oil cost, since both fuels derive from the same barrel. Since early 2026, diesel has at times been priced above petrol at many Irish forecourts, a reversal of the pattern that prevailed through most of the 2010s when diesel enjoyed a lower excise duty rate.

Motorway and forecourt pricing on national primary routes (N-roads) often carries a premium compared with town-centre stations. A driver willing to exit the motorway and fill up in the nearest town can frequently save 5 to 8 cent per litre, which adds up to more than EUR 3 per fill for a typical family car.

How FuelWatch tracks fuel prices across Ireland

FuelWatch is community-powered. Every price on the map was submitted by an Irish driver who stopped at a forecourt, saw the board price, and reported it in the app. There are no automated scrapes, no station-owner feeds, and no price modelling. What you see is what a real person paid, or was offered, at that exact station.

  1. A driver arrives at a forecourt They open FuelWatch and tap "Report price" on the station shown on the map.
  2. The price is validated automatically FuelWatch compares the submission to recent community reports for that station. Reports that fall well outside the local range are flagged for review rather than published instantly.
  3. The map updates The most recent validated price for each station is shown on the map. Older reports are preserved for trend analysis but do not affect the headline pin price.
  4. Other drivers benefit Anyone searching nearby can see which stations have reported lower prices and plan their route accordingly. Each report is a small act of civic contribution.

Coverage deepens with every new reporter. Urban areas with dense communities of FuelWatch users tend to have fresher and more accurate prices than rural areas, but the coverage is growing. If you notice a station missing from the map, you can add it via the app. Station metadata is sourced from OpenStreetMap, which means the mapping community also contributes every time a new forecourt is added to OSM.

Beyond petrol and diesel: all fuel types on one map

FuelWatch covers four fuel categories. Switch between them using the layer selector at the top of the price map.

The home heating oil layer is particularly useful in winter months, when kerosene prices can diverge significantly between counties depending on supplier competition and delivery logistics. The green diesel layer covers agricultural merchants and marina depots for farmers and marine users. The EV charging layer mirrors publicly available chargepoint data across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

You can also use the FuelWatch fuel cost calculator to estimate your monthly spend based on your vehicle type and typical mileage.

Northern Ireland fuel prices

FuelWatch covers Northern Ireland across all six counties: Antrim, Down, Derry, Armagh, Fermanagh, and Tyrone. Prices in Northern Ireland are denominated in pence per litre (p/L) because stations trade in Sterling rather than Euro. The FuelWatch app converts these into a comparable format so drivers who regularly cross the border can compare ROI and NI prices on the same screen.

The price differential between the Republic and Northern Ireland has historically been significant and can swing by several cent per litre depending on the EUR/GBP exchange rate, UK excise duty changes, and the timing of Budget announcements in either jurisdiction. Border counties, particularly Donegal and Monaghan, see regular cross-border shopping when the price gap widens enough to justify the detour. FuelWatch shows prices on both sides of the border without requiring users to switch between apps or region settings.
