How FuelWatch prices work

Compare the fuel, the price and the report date.

Where do FuelWatch prices come from?

Petrol and diesel pump prices come from people reporting what they see at stations. Delivered home heating oil comparisons use supplier website and quotation-form observations. Station and charger information comes from mapping sources and other location records. Each source answers a different question, so compare the fuel, currency, quantity and observation date together.

Consumer price comparison is free on the web, iOS and Android. Optional business reports are separate products.

Petrol and diesel: read the report date

A station price is an observation made at a particular time. Drivers submit updates through FuelWatch, and the report date helps you judge how recently a price was seen. Petrol and diesel can have different report times at the same station.

Before travelling, compare nearby reports with similar dates. A station may change its price before a new report arrives, and reports can contain mistakes. Confirm the price displayed at the forecourt before you fill up. A missing report means there is no reported price to compare; it does not mean the station is expensive or closed.

Start with petrol near you, diesel near you or the county guides.

Heating oil and green diesel: match the quotation

A delivered-oil quotation is tied to a fuel, quantity, delivery area and collection time. The same supplier may quote different totals for different volumes or destinations. Check the quotation date, delivery quantity, total price, tax basis and any delivery conditions before comparing suppliers.

The Order Oil comparison uses observations from supplier websites and quotation forms. A supplier may change its price or delivery availability after collection; confirm the final quote directly with that supplier. Community Home Oil and Green Diesel reports are separate observations and may not specify delivery volume or whether the price was for collection or delivery.

National figures and local prices answer different questions

A national summary describes the reports included in its sample. It is not the price at every station, and a change in the mix of reporting stations can affect the result. Read the period, currency, calculation and sample count alongside any average or median.

The published national petrol and diesel snapshot includes dates and sample counts. The homepage price chart shows the wider trend. Historical chart data includes publicly available research sources; from 9 April 2026 onward, the homepage averages use FuelWatch community reports.

Business data products have their own scope and calculation rules in the reporting methodology.

Station locations, chargers and currencies

FuelWatch covers stations across all 32 counties. Station metadata combines mapping and other location records; a location on the map does not by itself establish current opening hours, stock or a recent price report. Station data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

The EV charger map helps locate chargepoints. Check the charging operator for current availability, connector compatibility and the tariff that applies to your account.

Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland prices use different currencies. Compare the same unit and convert EUR and GBP to a common currency before deciding that a cross-border fill is cheaper. Include the cost of the journey.

Calculate the saving for your own fill

Multiply the difference per litre by the amount you buy, then subtract extra travel costs. For example, a 10-cent difference on a 50-litre fill saves €5 before a detour. That is a calculation example; the saving available to you depends on the prices and journey.

Use the fuel cost calculator with your own figures. Compare the same fuel grade, and check the pump price before buying.

Help keep the information useful

When you fill up, select the correct station and fuel, check the price you have entered and submit a report through FuelWatch. If you use photo scanning, review the extracted numbers before submitting.
