The M3 motorway, which opened in 2010, created a direct high-speed link from Clonee to Navan and transformed commuting patterns in north Meath. Navan, as the county town and largest urban centre, has the densest concentration of stations and the most competition. North Meath, from Kells through Oldcastle to the Cavan border, is more sparsely served. The R163 and older national primaries in this area have fewer stations and less competition.
